Love, Action, Fellowship with God

It's not enough to say you love someone. You have to show it. Obedience to what God tells us to do keeps us in fellowship with Him. If we are not obeying Him, we can not say we know Him or what He wants in an area. We can't claim we are doing God's will when we are walking in disobedience to what He tells us to do in His Word. The truth in these verses enable us to monitor our own walk with the Lord. If you feel like you can't go to God in prayer for something, check your life for sin and deal with that first.

I John 3:18-24  Dear children, let’s not merely say that we love each other; let us show the truth by our actions. Our actions will show that we belong to the truth, so we will be confident when we stand before God.  Even if we feel guilty, God is greater than our feelings, and he knows everything. Dear friends, if we don’t feel guilty, we can come to God with bold confidence. And we will receive from him whatever we ask because we obey him and do the things that please him. And this is his commandment: We must believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and love one another, just as he commanded us. Those who obey God’s commandments remain in fellowship with him, and he with them. And we know he lives in us because the Spirit he gave us lives in us.

1 John 2:4 If someone claims, "I know God," but doesn't obey God's commandments, that person is a liar and is not living in the truth.

I John 3:10 So now we can tell who are children of God and who are children of the devil. Anyone who does not live righteously and does not love other believers does not belong to God.

Go read the rest of this chapter and this chapter for more on how God wants us to live with one another. This is the NLT translation. I personally prefer the KJV because it is what I grew up with and is how I memorized all of the verses, but some of the visitors to the blog find the wording distracting from the message.
