Fatwood is wood filled with resin or pitch. This is the best natural firestarter. They sell it online, but you can find your own. Because of fatwood, I have been able to start a campfire in the rain with damp wood while stranded overnight somewhere very remote. I knew what to look for and how to use it. In that instance, I found a tree that had exploded from freezing and knew the resin-loaded strips of wood were what I needed. It was later winter, cold, and we were in a storm.
