The common blue violet, Viola sororia, has long been used for food and medicinal purposes. It is known to reduce inflammation which can relieve pain in arthritis, gout, and skin diseases like eczema. It promotes wound healing through its antiseptic properties. It supports respiratory health through its expectorative properties which relieve respiratory congestion. Topically it can relieve itching, rashes, eczema, dry skin, etc. It can relieve digestive discomforts and support healthy bowel movements. It is rich in antioxidant activity which can reduce the risk of chronic diseases. It works as a diuretic which can help remove toxins and excess fluids from the body. The leaves have antimicrobial properties and can also be used to make a mouthwash to fight oral bacteria and reduce gum inflammation. People make jelly and vinegar from the flowers. The leaves can be added to a dried nutritive green mix. The leaves can also be used fresh for salads, cooked greens, or added to soups.
