Aquiring Some Phlebotomy Skills

EmilyandHannahPhlebotomy

After my refresher course on suturing, I wanted to keep going.

Emily and Hannah were willing to expand skillset to include phlebotomy, so we did it together.

From our first try, we closed our eyes and learned to insert the needle into the vein by feel. This was a tip a nurse friend gave us.

I purchased two kits because I could not find one with all I wanted.

I love being 56 years and having two children at home. They make me laugh every day! I love where God led me. It is a good place!

6 down, 1 to go

EmilyDriving4

EmilyDriving3

Clint has homeschooled the classroom and behind the wheel for Driver's Ed for all of our children.
Emily passed her behind the wheel yesterday afternoon.
Per our tradition, she took her first solo trip to our neighbor-owned convenience store.
Emily is already a great driver. Clint taught all of our children in a Suburban. The smaller cars are a cakewalk after driving the big tank.

Brandon

Brandon has received his second promotion and raise in the last six months. HW is also preparing to buy him a brand new Tesla. The charging station is being installed in his garage. He is knocking the jobs out very early which is making them a lot of money. He is receiving a lot of recognition. Clint and I are very proud of his success.

Hannah's Graduation Photo

THISONE2

Hannah graduated at 14 years old in December 2023 if you go by the completion of her course. But, due to some issues on the school's part, she graduated at 15 years old in January 2024 if you go by the date the paperwork was finally finished.

She doesn't care one way or the other. She's happy to be finished!

She has been working on her driving coursework for the last several weeks.

Soon, Hannah and Emily will start college together as was their plan.

Victory! 7 of 7 Graduated

I shared previously that Hannah completed her high school course. Hannah's high school diploma arrived yesterday evening! That means my 29.5 year long career as a homeschooling mother has ended.

Thoughts:

I have worked myself right out of a job.

I have taught seven people to read and write. That was an honor and a privilege.

I have taught academics from preschool to high school. Hats off to the classroom teachers who do it for other people's children with so many limitations placed on them.

Shew, that was a lot of work!! Some days I didn't think I'd make it to this point.

But, it was so much FUN!!! I am so glad I did it!

Through 14 pregnancies that had me on so much "complete bed rest" that I can't stand to stay in my bedroom, I learned that you really can't stop children from learning. Give them tools and they will learn. Joshua learned how to read, number recognition, count, add, and subtract with no instruction from me. He picked it up from his siblings and the tools (learning-rich environment) we had in our home...while I was on bed rest.

I owe a debt of gratitude to everyone who contributed along the way from those who fought for my right to do so, to those who made the curriculum I used, to classroom teachers who were willing to answer questions online, and to the ones who gave me tons of resources from their own classrooms to fellow homeschool moms who cheered me on when I got overwhelmed, to those who thought Clint and I were crazy but trusted where the Lord was leading us and kept praying for us despite their concerns.

It grew me in many ways, but anything that challenges you will do that if you let it.

What a blessing homeschooling has been to our family! It strengthened our relationships with God, our marriage, our parent/child relationship, and their sibling relationships. It has allowed us to experience much more of life. I am thankful God put it on two young people's hearts to take this journey with Him.

Now it's time to celebrate with the people who loved on us and prayed for us through almost three decades of homeschooling. Then it's onward to get these two driving and graduated!

Yet Another Excelling Homeschool Graduate

BrandonJackson
There goes another homeschool graduate excelling again!

Brandon has FAR exceeded his employer's expectations. Brandon finishes the jobs anywhere from 3 days to two weeks ahead of time.  As a result, Brandon's area has been expanded, and his boss says he is getting a very large raise. Brandon makes well over 6 figures and will soon get his new raise. God has blessed him for his quality workmanship and his obedience in tithing.

Clint and I have absolutely no regrets about homeschooling our seven children. In fact, God continues to reaffirm that decision quite frequently. We are so very, very thankful for His leading in this area of our lives.

Affordable College Options

Many people are so stuck in the system that they can't see their way out of it. They think it is a sign that they are doing well to send their child to an expensive college. Those of us who know, question their financial sense. It is not rational to go into a great amount of debt when you can accomplish the very same goal with the same results for much less. Just because it is the way everyone else is doing it does not mean it is the best way for you to do it.

Why become a debt slave
when there are alternative and affordable ways
to reach the same goals?

I just went over someone's finances where they are paying off an $88k student loan on a $40k per year job. They are dependent on a disabled relative to make ends meet. The relative is not long for the nursing home due to her disability which puts the first person in an insecure position.

Asked on social media: What college is only $9K!?! Lol

Wendy Asbell
Online colleges offer accredited degrees for much, much less. We called around and asked the Human Resource Departments of major employers in our area what they looked for, and if they were OK with the online colleges we were looking at. They all told us that as long as it is accredited, they will accept it. We did not pay more than $6k for any of our 5 adult children's college degrees. All of them have good-paying jobs and most are in leadership positions. Two purchased homes at 23 years old, one moved out and completely supported herself at 19 (she graduated high school at 14 and college at 17), and our 22-year-old is currently looking for a house. We still have two to go through college but they want to do it together. One of those two graduated high school at 15 and the other will graduate at 14. Alternative education is more affordable and has the same or better results.

An extra note: I expect Emily and Hannah will both graduate college before 18 years old.

Homeschooling Truths

Your homeschool day doesn’t have to begin at 8am.

You can let your kids sleep in and you can drink an extra cup of coffee in the quiet.
You can do morning time in the afternoon.
You can do your read alouds in bed at night.
You can homeschool in the evenings, on the weekends, or during baby’s naptime.
You can get all your homeschooling done before 10am if you are early risers.
You can homeschool in the pockets of your day - when you’re in the car, waiting for an appointment, while you’re cooking dinner, or on the sidelines of a sibling’s at soccer practice.
Your homeschool rhythm doesn’t have to look anything like a traditional school day.
The beauty of homeschooling is that you get to decide what works for your family. The where, when, and how is up to you - there is no wrong way to do it.
If your family doesn’t like mornings, don’t pressure yourselves to begin your day early. This is the freedom of homeschooling.
You can build your homeschool rhythms around your work schedule, farm chores, the seasons, or sleep schedules. This is the freedom of homeschooling.
You can homeschool year-round, take a break every six weeks, or take an entire month off in the middle of the year because of illness, a new baby is born, you move across the country, or you need to care for a loved one. This is the freedom of homeschooling.
Build your homeschool around the life you actually live - not the life the system says you’re supposed to live.

#6 of 7

BethanyProudofEmily

We have homeschooled driver's education for all of our children so far. It is state approved and very, very thorough. Clint received his driver's instruction from the public school he attended. Mine was through a private instructor. Neither of us received the in-depth classroom or behind-the-wheel training our children have through the homeschooled programs we have used.

15 years old and graduated!

Emily2

EmilyDiplomas

God led me to the right name for this girl. Emily JOY!
AKA "SmartyPants" per her Uncle Phil. :-D
We are very proud of her for putting in the hours of study that allowed her to graduate from high school at 15 years old!

CONGRATULATIONS AMANDA!!

Well, the word came several days earlier than planned. It has not been announced within the company yet though. (It's OK for me to post it here.)

Amanda passed her Industrial Master Tech exam with flying colors!

She did excellently (98%) on the exam which was graded by 4-5 experts. They said she knocked it out of the ballpark! Not only will she get a big promotion and significant pay raise, but she has also made history within the company!

Within the company, she is the first woman to pass the exam and will be the first female Master Tech.

God gave her the strong mechanical bent, and she is shining brightly for Him as she puts them to use. We are very proud of her and very thankful to the Lord for blessing her with these opportunities.

Way to go Emily!!

As of last week, Emily, 15 years old, has finished her homeschooled high school and has a state-accredited diploma. Way to go Emily!

What they turn into..

We cannot continue to send our children to Caesar for their education and be surprised when they come home

as Romans.

It's no longer enough to teach our children Bible stories;
they need doctrine and apologetics.
-William Lane Craig*

I only half agree with this statement.

It has never been enough and they have always needed doctrine and apologetics along with the stories of the Bible. They need to be able to spot false teaching as soon as they hear it. They also need to make the connection between the heroes in the Bible to engage their hearts.

Dear Reader, Clint and I used ABeka Bible Doctrines for Today with all of our children and with some of our young friends. It can be found used for much less money. It is great for young people and adults and makes a good faith-building refresher course. My love to all!

*Never assume that because Clint and I agree with one thing a person says that we agree with all the things they say. We disagree with Mr. Craig on the earth's age and a few other things. There are other people we have quoted that have good points of wisdom with which we disagree on other things.

Don't Give Up

Amanda was working on a machine that kept going down. She'd get it running and it would work fine for a while and shut down again. The battle between my girl and the machine went back and forth all day. A co-worker stopped her as she went back to make it start again and asked "Don't you EVER give up?!" As she proceeded walking she looked at him and said, "That's the one thing my parents never taught me."

Reaping the Rewards of Following the Lord's Leading

Brandon was telling me how a person he trained had gone on to do very well. He said it was very rewarding to see someone he taught go so far. I sat there smiling.

I homeschooled Brandon.

God is the one who turned it into a success. :-)

Now, Brandon is teaching others and watching them succeed!

Seeing how the Lord used my yesterdays to bring me and my family to a good place today encourages me to keep trusting Him today for my future.

Brandon's Exciting News

I can share it now that he has turned in his notice to his current employer.

Brandon has been hired by Honeywell!

He will be working in the industrial sector setting up and migrating industrial computer systems throughout our region.

They were impressed with his broad-ranged credentials and the multi-facility supervisory roles he has achieved at the age of 29. They said he interviewed extremely well and has expertise in the areas they want.

They gave him an incredible offer! It was one he could not refuse! They have more opportunities for him to advance in the areas he desires, so he is very excited!

While he was willing to sacrifice in pay to get to a company that will help him move further along in his career, he did not have to do that. They exceeded his current salary, gave him a car, phone, computer, vacation, and better benefits. The only thing he had to give up is seeing his Dad and sister now and then at work and his 8 1/2 year tenure.

Homeschooling led by God works! Don't let fear or naysayer's comments hold you back from walking where the Lord is leading! Our five oldest children have performed so well that they were put into leadership roles very quickly. Emily and Hannah are not of employment age.

Thank you to those who were praying with us! Thank you to those who are giving God thanks and rejoicing with us now!

Homeschooling: Grade Levels

"Here’s your friendly reminder that grade levels are an artificial construct. They didn’t exist until 100 years ago. They were designed specifically for mass education in public schools.

It doesn’t matter what grade level of math or grammar or science your kid is in. What matters is that they are always progressing. Checking off boxes like grade levels is a trap full of stress and guilt, yet for some reason, homeschoolers insist on copying the very system they claim to disdain.
When people ask me “what do you recommend for 3rd grade grammar” or “6th grade science” I don’t give them the answer they’re looking for. I don’t know what 3rd grade grammar even is. I just know that my kids start with phonics, then reading, and then learning to spell based on phonics rules, then move on to copy work, and by about middle school they take their first Easy Grammar course. It’s the same with all subjects.
Progression is the goal. Being well-educated is the goal. Not checking off a list. So if my kids take pre-Algebra at age 10 or age 16, it’s not a big deal. What’s important is that they grasp the content and are able to move on to the next level.
It’s like video games. Just keep going until you level up, and if the kids aren’t getting it, stay in that world a little longer. If they are, advance to the next level. 🌟
Have confidence in your ability to make decisions for your kids! A curriculum is only a tool; YOU are the one in charge of construction." -Nicky Truesdell

Regarding Colleges

I was asked what colleges we used for our children. Like we did with educating our children, my husband and I took it to the Lord. Like He did with that, we felt Him leading us differently. We had a choice, trust Him and walk where He led or do what everyone else was doing.

We were very blessed that we had solid guidance and excellent examples in our lives of how well alternative colleges work. These were people who had home-educated their children or were adults who themselves were home-educated. These godly influences have been and continue to be very valuable assets in our lives from starting homeschooling to high school to college to planning our retirement and so very much more. They don't mind listening to us bounce ideas off of them, and they have been very frank in sharing what has worked and what hasn't. Strong godly friendships are treasures in this world.

Here's the answer I shared:

What we did was call around to the HR departments of the best employers in our area and asked them what they liked to see. James Madison and Penn Foster were the colleges mentioned by most of them. Why go into enormous debt if the people doing the actual hiring don't care about the name but only the accreditation? especially since many people don't even work in their chosen degree's field.

James Madison would not allow our 13-year-old to start high school with them, so we used Penn Foster for high school because they were willing to work with us. She took a test to prove she could handle the work. Then Penn Foster would not let her start college at 14, so we used James Madison because they would. LOL! She earned her degree at 16.

For our son in IT where certifications, not degrees, are the norm, we told him to get the degree AND certifications to give himself an edge. That advice worked beautifully for him. He was the youngest person (19 yo) ever hired by a company to run two industrial plants' IT departments. He earned the job over several other people who had worked in the industry for decades. He now oversees 5 industrial plants across the nation and is being encouraged to take another bigger promotion.

Even if they are skill-based like my third born son (construction), we recommended a college degree (which he earned). We told all of our children, "Skills open certain doors, and degrees open other doors. Having both opens even more doors. Life is long, and you do not know what changes and challenges are ahead. It is wise to make yourself as attractive to as many employers as you can."

That's where God led us. So far, it has worked out very well for our oldest five children. Emily has started high school. Hannah will next year. At this point in time, both of them feel like they want to get degrees.

Article: Homeschooled Teen Wins Gold at Physics Olympiad

Homeschooled Teen Wins Gold at Physics Olympiad

Homeschooled student Evan Erickson has become one of the most accomplished teens on the planet when it comes to physics and math.

In July, the 17-year-old from Minnesota won a gold medal at the 51st International Physics Olympiad, where he competed as part of a five-member team representing the United States.

Evan’s mother, Rena, who has homeschooled her five children over the course of  23 years, admits she’s excited by Evan’s achievement and his moment of renown. She’s quick to add that she and her husband Dan encourage all their children to develop their full potential and to celebrate one another’s triumphs.

“We don’t compete with each other,” Rena said. “Everybody is everybody else’s cheerleader.”
