Our Low Cost DIY Low Maintenance Aviary

aviary1

This was a solid oak ET center the government gave Habitat for Humanity. It cost us $15. For $60 in supplies and some things we had around the farm, we now have a very low maintenance aviary. The parakeets can fly back and forth to their hearts' content. We have auto feeders and waterers (Walmart $5-7 each) in the bottom. We check them daily, but they only have to be refilled once every 3-4 weeks. The drawer at the bottom captures the seed hulls, feathers, and poo and opens for very easy cleaning. No mess on the floors! This is a very low maintenance way to enjoy birds without the cage bars obstructing the view. There are many different DIY aviaries online using recycled furniture. Caleb kept the leftover oak and hardware for other projects of his. The tiniest scraps will be used as kindling in our woodstove next winter. At the top is a recycled light. Caleb used some wheels off of other recycled furniture on this, so I can roll it around easily. (The wheels were not installed when I took the picture.)
